The decline of shooting.

Well today I easily won a game of warhammer against  my friends dwarfs

And this battle showed one aspect of 8th really really well.
The decline of shooting

Now this is what happend in this 1500 point game

His army was  30 or so  ironbreakers
2X 10 quireleers
2 bolttrowers
1 stone tower
1 cannon
some characters ( I think 4?)

I for one had

1 Hoard of squigs
2 big units of night goblins (whit nets)
1 small unit night goblins (bunker)
2 units of bear bone  wolfriders
chariots
2 doom drivers
1 rock lobber

and some characters (6!!!! damm goblins are cheap)

Now  back in the day  of 7th I would have found his army a bit scary
For starters his iron breakers would have been a pain. Whit only the front of my units attacking (instead of the 3 ranks of squigs I now had. Those iron breakers would have been almost impossible to kill.
Secondly my army would have had a lot smaller units properly around 30. And that would mean they could be panicked of the board.

Now in 8th I just had massive units (40 or more) that hardly noticed the shooting.
And the squig herd hoard could attack in 3 ranks killing 13 iron breakers in the first round of combat breaking them and running them down in one fell swoop.

He had so manny points in warmachines, but the only war machine that really  worried me was the stone tower. Cause it hits so many models at once  (Next time I should deploy my bunker 10 wide 2 deep)   But even that has goten  worse vs troops in 8th  being reduced to s 3 and allowing armour saves.

In total his army was totally ineffective at stoping  mine . I lost my  redirecters to his shooting  and then rolled over him completly whit my normal units.  By turn 3 it was all over.

I just don't think that pure shooting armies are effective in 8th. Shooting now needs to be aplied to kill redirectors and force multiplayers (like a corpse cart). But the real fighting is better left to the infantry. And I like that,  warhammer is getting closer to real mideaval ways of war.

Planning and Timeing

Well Whee I just won a fantasy battle.

Ok it was the lamest win ever and then I lost the next game to the same guy. But a win is a win.... or not

 Let me explain
I was going to play against a Vampire count player and I aksed him shall we roll for the scenario.
Seeing as it's now 8th and it acutely has scenarios that seemed fair to me. I guess it seemed fair to him as well and we rolled for it. And ended up whit  blood and glory. This is  the scenario where you win
when you reach the opponents breaking point. Its 1 point per part of 1000 army points so for a 2500 point battle that's  3 points
He only had a general worth 2 points and noting else so I won by default. So first win of the day was in the pocket.

(apearently blood and glory is also a free
playstion  phone game who knew)

Of course it felt  cheap but it also shows that planing is important . I had planed ahead for this scenario it's the whole reason my main units have banners. They might add some visual flair to the army but in game they don't serve much of a purpose. 8th Seems to be all about the kills and that +1 combat resolution from the banner is not going the make the difference . Especially not since most of my units will be steadfast any way. But for that scenario its a must or you just auto lose.
So I gues next time it wont be all ghouls cause those cant take a banner.

Any way we played a second game(or should that be we actually played a game) It was battle for the pass. A scenario I like. It lets me bunch up my army and I do not need to worry to much about my flanks. I lost this one again. But  it was a close game.

Let me sum up what I learned

1) Don't waste your  stone towers trying to kill monsters.  Its not verry likely and undead regenerate those things way to fast if you cant kill it its back at full wounds again next turn. Its much better to shoot there infantry block and reduce the numbers.

2) Timing seems every thing against undead. I really need to learn that you cannot break undead. My savage orcs managed to get a charge off at the unit whit his general. And I won that combat by a fair amount. But I made two mistakes.  One I came in on a turn where he had always strike first and thus lost a lot of models. Two  all it takes to keep a units busy is two rock hard charters  that can't be hit and manage to do 4 wounds every turn  making the combat a draw.  As orcs go the first charge is every thing so that when it needs to go down.
Next time I'll just try to  kill ass many of those ghouls in my shooting fase as I can. And then use my dispel scroll to lock down his magic phase. And then charge in . That  way  he get less attacks and less wounds to hide his characters in that hope fully letting me wipe em out in one go.

3) Vampire counts are a PAIN in the ass for orcs There is the  unbreakable stuff I already mentioned and then there is the ethereal stuff. How am I ever going to kill that. There is only one. ONE magic missile in the little waagh and that's it.  So my lvl 2 night goblin is the only thing that is going to stop those wraiths. And that's a pain. Now my opponent used his one unit of hexwraiths to hold op my entire right flank for 3 turns and nothing I could do about it. I am just glad he did not charge them into the squigs I would never have beaten them in combat and  it would have made them untargetable for my spells. His 5 man  fast cave unit would have hold up my 380 point horde for the entire game.
May the designer that came up whit them be crushed by the foot of GORK
(For those who play LOL yes
that is rabadon's death cap. I am such a nerd)

4) Realy  just put  those night goblins deep  there is no reason to horde they have such a weak attack.

Well that was it hopefully I can win my next game

Cya and May the dice gods bless you.

First game

Well I just played my first game
and it was a disater

Well that's the way I look at it, but it was probably  closer then I think.
I still managed to do some damage to my opponents army but it was just not enoug.

So what have i learned form this
1 HORDE your squigs.- these little buggers might pack a big wallop but they can't realy take it. Witch means I need to take quite a few of them to be able to hit back. This game I took two units of 20 whit 10 handlers and that was pretty ok. But in fact those  squigs on the third and fourth rank are pretty much wasted they don't get to attack.   So it might be better just to go the full Monty and go for the 40 squig 20 handlers horde.

2 Get this guy killed in the campaing.

This is my warboss i just took him for fluff reasons and cause I just wanted to  use the model for once.  But he's such a Achilles' heel.  He has the be my genral (cause the campaing says so) and thats the problem.  Thus I need to keep him near my army. And that is a waste of his points.  Also it takes just one warmachine to shut him down cause he is just so easy to kill. He has no where he can hide.  And him dieing is a disaster, cause my squigs and  night goblins really cant go whit out his ld.
But since I have to take him in the campaign I have only one option>
I need to get him KILLED. So I can replace him

3  Death magic is scary

Yea Realy my  savage orc shaman is critical to my overal armie
He makes my savage orks that much better whit his lucky shrunken head.  And he realy helps me out in the magic phase . But if he were to Die that is all gone. Having him constantly targeted by these very deadly death magic spells is really scary and stressing. Also  Cause you realy need to keep him alive. Just the potential of the death magic forces you to let a lot more other magic go trough.  Also games workshop can lick my balls for making the orc sniper spells so worthless but these almost one hit kills.

Well I did learn some more things. Like that I am a sloppy deployer and that I still need to watch for frenzy. But I gues that i'll just have to live and learn

And my the dice gods bless you

(they sure did not bless me  all my war machines killed was one morn-fang)

Savage orcs

Here are some pics of the first rank of my savage orc bigones horde

Its going to be 38 strong including a banner and champ. but no musician (damn you ETC 450 point limit)

Its going to be joined by a great shaman whit the lucky schrunken head

And a savage orc big boss whit a crown of command(on the left)

And they are going to go on one of my flanks and roffel stomp there way back to mid
I'll put some more pics up when they are totally done and at that time I will talk about them a bit more in depth.

SQUIGS

I love SQUIGS. Realy I can't deny it  SQUIGS are great.
I just love the concept  SQUIGS really are noting more than a mouth on legs.
And they just want to do one thing. and that is nom nom nom on my enemies.

But in game they are pretty good two.
2 strenght 5 attacks on ws 4 for 8 points is not a bad thing
Specially not in 8th. Where the only thing that realy matters is how killy your are for your points.
Its not going to get any better than high strength attacks for low points.

But as promised some pictures

Here are 15 of the squigs ..............sorry SQUIGS i painted for my first squig herd.
I am  most likely going  to ad a other 5  to this unit and then put 10 herders whit them giving me a nice 30 strong unit  5 wide 6 deep.

A other thing I recently painted is my mangler

My gaming buddies think these things are really powerful.

And I can see where they are coming from.
( I mean mine did eat a stonehorn just a few weeks ago)

But they are so so so
squishy.  when it comes to shooting its just a 65 point ogre.

T 4 3 wounds that's it most armies can just shoot it  whit a trow away unit of archers and its 65 points down the drain.

But then again  it does give you a other deployment  and  against elite armies like WoC this thing is PAIN.

Also you might notice I did not put the squigs on top of each other

There are two reasons for this. 1) it think it looks retarded and 2) I liked the look of them fighting to get to the  enemy first.  So that's it for today. Maybe ill get around to placing more pics on to morrow.

Hmm it looks like I forgot to put  in some large typing there when talking about my mangler so ill just do it here twice for good measure  SQUIGS. SQUIGS.

Cya and my the dice gods bless you

Pics of my leaders

Well time for pictures of some of the models I did lately (or not so lately)
I took them with my phone so they or not so great. But then again I ain't such a great painter so it's properly K

So first  the great leader of my empire.
BD Snik grit

He's the power behind the throne
So while the black orc warboss might think hes in charge he's just not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Talking about

Gnasha git grinder.
My orc warboss that will lead my second army obviusly he's on a wyvren as you can see
Personally I normally don't take monster mounts cause they make for such a tempting target  for warmachines and whit O&G you really can't miss that ld bubble. But then again on the wyvren that bubble is 18 inch. So it does make him a better leader. To bad he's so expensive.

Next post some more models

Blood in the Badlands part 1

Campaing away

Well we started of whit the first round of the campaign.
We are playing the blood in the bad lands campaign  recently released by gw. We have 8 players
2 Highelfs (i hate those)
1 Ogre kingdoms (how will i ever stop a irongutstar?)
1 skaven (pfff)
1 Beastmen (are they beasts that walk as men or men that act like beasts)
1 vampirecounts (oh look they are already dead)
1 Bretonians (goodie goodie two shoes)
1 Orcs and goblins (that would be me)

Since all the other players in the campaign are way more experienced in 8th fantasy than me ( i am more of a 40k player) this is going to be a uphill battle for sure.

So i  am going to go for a good story instead of a win.  And as luck would have it the O&G special rule for this campaign is rather for giving.  If i lose one of my armies (very likely) it's going to reappear any where in my empire (whee) so i can never run out of armies.

After set up I ended up in a fairly open piece of the map  sandwiched between ogres and bretonians. And of course the blasted castle flew into my empire. Making me prime target for every one.  Luckily this did not end up the way i expected. Only two empires moved armies into my own.
The ogre kingdom play and i am allied whit him (goblins do look a lot like gnoblars after all)  and the bretonnians. Now the three of us are on the same tile inside my empire. And that is great. Since i am fighting the bretonian player for a other tile  already that battle is going to be decided by a dice roll. Now i can let him fight the ogre player firs. what a 50% change of him pushing those damm knights out. If that fails i can roll for my own army whit again a 50% change of pushing him back and if that fails i still have a 5+ save on the tile since its next to my fortress.   That gives me only about 17% chance of loosing that tile .
Mean while i  am attacking  the bretonian player on a tile close to my empire. He has no armies defending it but sadly its close to his capital so only a 66% of me getting it.  I attacked that tile cause its a O&G merc camp. Giving the owner the ability to field 250 points of either core or specail form the O&G book. Of course that's useless to me. But ill be damned if my fellow greenskins have to live in slavery.

I'll try and put some pictures up from my army as soon as i get the time.

And may the dicegods bless you

Now for your information here is the campaign map
Of course i am the very manly pink warboss (damm  those random colours why the hell did he not  for a different colour of blue?)
